Practice what you preach

I was always taught to treat others how I would wish to be treated and I know if it was me in therapy, I would want to know that this person really understands what they are talking about.

I also just think the skills are great.

My go-to skill focuses on how I’m spending my time and whether I am connecting with the things, activities and people that make me feel good. It takes some effort to get started, but I find that’s the worst bit; the getting started.

When it gets to the evening and I’m tired from a long day of work and parenting, it’s easy to get in my pyjamas and lounge in front of the TV. But, there’s often a list of jobs I want to get done, things I’d like to get started with, books I want to read, friends I’d like to see, that just don’t happen.

I know when I do these things, I get the sense of achievement and enjoyment from them and then feel like I want to do more and continue. Sometimes I don’t quite get it right, but I go back to the drawing board and decide on a new plan for how I will spend my time that day/week until I get the right balance of relaxing, recharging and getting stuff done.
